Everything you wanted to know about Pawnee City
Pawnee City is located about 70 minutes southeast of Lincoln, 90 minutes south of Omaha and about 3 hours northwest of Kansas City. Named for the Pawnee Indians that crossed the county from west to east in the early days, the picturesque area lays amid gently rolling hills and the smooth flowing contours of farmland. Some of the most beautiful scenery in the midwest can be seen in the spring and fall as the landscape blossoms into full color. Outside of our great city is also a hunter's paradise as some of the best deer, wild turkey, pheasant and quail hunting in the state can be found. Our people make the difference in Pawnee City. We are as independent and proud as the early settlers, yet few towns will enjoy the caring and kindness that our people share with each other. When people say "I'm from Pawnee City," they do it with pride.
Pawnee City is the county seat of Pawnee County and is a town with a very interesting history. It's on the National Registry of Historic Places with 56 different properties included in the district. Although a fire burned down most of the small town in 1881, nearly everything was rebuilt of brick in the Italiante Style and has many good examples of major architectural styles popular during the Victorian Period. Six blocks of the historic business district even have Victorian lighting as they did in the early 1900's. The first governor of the State of Nebraska was from Pawnee City. David Butler was elected in 1867 when Nebraska first became a state. His house has been moved to the Pawnee City Historical Society Museum and restored to look like it might have been in 1867, complete with some things donated by the family.
The future is bright for Pawnee City. In the last five years we have enjoyed a renaissance that few other cities our size could accomplish and enjoy. We have a new Prairie Hill Sports Complex with three new baseball and softball fields. A new state-of-the-art running track has been added to our school's sports complex. The city pond has been completely rebuilt and will soon have camping sites. Our hospital is one of the best in the state and recently enjoyed a million-plus dollar expansion and remodel. Our downtown business district has also been rebuilt with new street paving, sidewalks and utilities. We have recently added new retail stores and many of the older buildings have been and are in the process of being remodeled.
If you like what has happened in Pawnee City, the best is yet to come! "Quality of Life", continues to be the theme that our city is focusing on for a bright future. A new paved walking/biking trail will soon be built from the downtown area to our new Prairie Hill Sports Complex. A new $2 million dollar fitness/community center is being planned for. This new facility will add an indoor swimming pool, weight room, child care center, locker rooms, basketball arena and community room to our existing outdoor swimming pool. This fitness center should be the best center in all southeast Nebraska!
